How should the end come?
Longer life spans and changing attitudes towards care and hospital treatment mean attitudes towards dying and euthanasia are complicated, writes Katharine Whitehorn.
Until relatively recently, people mostly only lived for a few years after stopping work - now they may easily hang on for another thirty or forty years. In the words of Dr Richard Nicholson, who edited a magazine called Medical Ethics, "a 30-year sabbatical is just not on".
If you're educated and have enough money, if you're obsessed by bridge or golf or grandchildren, if you're allowed to go on working, you may have a good time, at least until your health packs up.

'Ghost ships' near Australia!
'Ghost ship' deaths an accident
Three sailors who disappeared from a yacht later found empty and drifting off the coast of Australia died in a freak accident, an inquest found.
The vessel, Kaz II, was found with its engine running, food on the table, and its full complement of lifebelts.
Derek Batten, 56, and brothers Peter and Jim Tunstead, in their 60s, left on an eight-week trip from Queensland to Western Australia in April last year.
But their yacht was found adrift just three days later.

Australia baffled by 'ghost ship'
The crew members had all disappeared
A ship full of rotting fish, with no crew or life-rafts, has been found drifting off the remote north-west coast of Australia.
Dubbed the "ghost ship", the 20-metre (65-foot) vessel, registered in Taiwan and flying an Indonesian flag, was boarded by the Australian navy last week after it was spotted drifting aimlessly.

Famous ghost ship found!
A group headed by the author Clive Cussler and film producer John Davis said it had discovered the ghost ship's remains lying on the Rochelais reef, off the coast of Haiti.
The true story of her missing crew may never be known.
The ship was found sailing off the Azores in 1872 with no-one aboard. The captain, his wife and two-year-old daughter were inexplicably missing.
The wooden vessel is almost completely covered by coral, which made tracking it down all the more difficult.

What if he had never been found?
Wired News - AP News: "Ivins was removed from his lab in Maryland by police on July 10 and temporarily hospitalized, according to court records, because it was feared that he was a danger to himself and others. But it was unclear whether he was still employed by the lab at the time of his death Tuesday.
That raises the question of whether Ivins still had his security clearance and, if so, how he kept it, given that his social worker said Ivins had been viewed as homicidal and sociopathic by his psychiatrist."

Scientists find bugs that eat waste and excrete petrol?
Unbelievably, this is not science fiction. Mr Pal holds up a small beaker of bug excretion that could, theoretically, be poured into the tank of the giant Lexus SUV next to us. Not that Mr Pal is willing to risk it just yet. He gives it a month before the first vehicle is filled up on what he calls “renewable petroleum”. After that, he grins, “it’s a brave new world”.
Mr Pal is a senior director of LS9, one of several companies in or near Silicon Valley that have spurned traditional high-tech activities such as software and networking and embarked instead on an extraordinary race to make $140-a-barrel oil (£70) from Saudi Arabia obsolete. What if this is true?

Xbox 360 update canceled
BetaNews | Xbox 360 update canceled while Microsoft works on game portability: " Xbox Live general manager Marc Whitten says Microsoft is spending time on building out the infrastructure for the service and will skip over its regular bi-annual update. Typically in the past, Microsoft has pushed an update in the spring and fall. It does not plan to release a comprehensive update this spring, however, because it is preparing a DRM change that would allow users to take their games with them if they change consoles.
By Ed Oswald, BetaNews May 23, 2008, 1:26 PM
Xbox Live's catalog of games will also see a refresh in the coming months. Those more than six months old with a Metacritic score of under 65 and conversion rate below six percent will be delisted to make way for new titles.
In an attempt to promote better games, Microsoft will now also more than double the size limit of Xbox Live games from 150MB to 350MB. More flexibility will additionally be given on pricing of games, and a 1600 point (Xbox Live purchases are made with Microsoft Points) option would be added for developers."
